Malayalam filmdom is all set for another debutant director, Amal Neerad, whose Big B, starring Mammootty, is all set for release this coming Vishu (April 14). Cinematographer turned director Neerad's filmography includes Mammootty-starrer Black (directed by Ranjith) and Ram Gopal Varma projects, Shiva and James. Big B also stars Nafisa Ali, Manoj K Jayan, Pasupathy (of Veyil and Virummandi fame), Vijayaraghavan, Innocent and Mamta. In a conversation with Binoy Valsan, Amal Neerad opens up about his debut venture.
Big B is about the life and times of Bilal (Mammootty). The choices and sacrifices he has to make to protect his loved ones, his values and personal ideology. Hailing from the gritty streets of Fort Kochi, he is forced to migrate to Mumbai where he becomes a part of the dreaded underworld. Bilal returns back to his native land but is confronted with a Kochi that has suffered a massive commercial makeover. How Bilal copes with this new scenario and the characters around him forms the crux of the film. The movie also introduces Nafisa Ali and Pasupathy into the Malayalam film industry. As far as the title goes it could be interpreted as Big Bilal, Big Brother (Valyettan, a screen image associated with Mammootty), Big Bodyguard or even Big Boy!
