Ashtamudi Lake (Ashtamudi Kayal) is a freshwater lake in the Kollam District of Kerala, India. Ashtamudi means 'eight branches' (Ashta = 'eight'; mudi = 'branch') in the local language of Malayalam. This name is indicative of the lake's topography: a lake with multiple branches. Ashtamudi Lake is currently registered as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.
Boating through Ashtamudi Kayal is a thrilling experience. Kollam - Alapuzha Water route is through Ashtamudikkayal. Chinese nets (Cheenavayal) fixed in the backwaters adds to the beauty of this place.
